What Does the Time Zone City Page Show?

Current time and time zone

The area at the top shows the current local time and the time zone in the selected location.

  • The Current row shows the current time zone.
  • The Next Change row shows the time zone after the next Daylight Saving Time (DST) clock change.
  • The Current Offset row shows the current time difference between the location and Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the world's time standard.
  • The Difference row shows the time difference between the location and your home location.

Problems? See topics like “Why does it show the wrong time zone?” and “How do I change the location in the Difference row?” in the FAQ section below.

Country Map with link to Time Zone Map

The map on the right shows the city's location within its country and world region. Click on the map to see the location on our Time Zone Map.

Change city

Use the search field to open the Time Zone City Page for a different location. The search supports ZIP/postal codes for several countries, including the United States and Canada.

You can also enter geographic coordinates (longitude and latitude) to find the same information for any place on Earth.

Problems? See “The city search lists several places with the same name. Which is the one I'm looking for?” in the FAQ: Troubleshooting section below.

Weather, Time Zone, DST, and Sun & Moon tabs

Use the navigation tabs next to the search field to access the Main City Page (Time/General tab) or other sub-pages dedicated to specific topics, such as Weather, DST Changes, and Sun & Moon in the city.

The latter includes a multitude of astronomy information related to the city. It is divided into several different pages, which can be viewed via the links that appear just below the tabs after you click on Sun & Moon:

Time zone bar

The horizontal bar in the middle of the page provides a graphical overview of the location's time zones over the course of the current year. For locations observing Daylight Saving Time (DST) during part of the year, the bar reflects all DST switches, as well as any other time zone alterations during the year.

Hover over the bar for more information about the time zone and clock changes. Click on the bar to find more information about the time zones shown there.

Time zone table

The table at the bottom of the page shows time zones and DST changes for a year of your choice. Use the drop-down at the top to select a different year range. Click on a time zone abbreviation to find more information about the time zone.

Problems? See topics like “Why can't I select a year in the distant past or future?” in the FAQ section below.

FAQ: Troubleshooting

Why can't I select a year in the distant past?

The time zone table at the bottom of the page provides an overview of time zones and clock changes in a year of your choice. However, the time span covered here varies from one location to another.

For past years, the general rule is that we only display time zone information if we were able to obtain reliable information for the year in question. For many cities, the cut-off point for past years is 1970. However, we often offer earlier time zone information for another city in the same country. If that is the case, a link appears below the table that takes you to the Time Zone City Page for that city.

For locations in some countries, another way to find out more information about a location's time zone and DST history is to open the Time Zone Page for the country in which it lies. To go there, simply enter the country into the search field near the top of the page.

Having problems selecting a future year? Please see next question!

Why can't I select a year in the distant future?

The time zone table at the bottom of the page provides an overview of time zones and clock changes in a year of your choice. However, the time span covered here varies from one location to another.

The table also includes future years. As time zones and Daylight Saving Time rules can always change, we naturally cannot guarantee that these future dates are correct. However, in most countries, DST dates and time zones rarely change, so it is very likely that our predictions are correct for most locations. For locations that have a history of frequent or very short-term changes, we explicitly mark them as preliminary dates.

Why does it show the wrong time zone?

Although mistakes can of course always happen, the current time zone we display for each city is most probably correct. Before sending in your error report, please consider the following:

If all this does not solve the problem, please let us know.

Why does it show the wrong time?

Although mistakes can of course always happen, the time we display for each city is most probably correct. Before sending in your error report, please consider the following:

  • If the time seems to be off by a small amount, up to 1 or 2 minutes, you may be looking at an outdated version of the page. Please try reloading the page to see if that solves the problem.
  • Many countries and territories regularly change their clocks as Daylight Saving Time (DST) starts and ends. Perhaps there has been a clock change recently that you were not aware of? To check, please hover your mouse cursor over the time zone bar and the see the message that is displayed.
  • Are you looking at a city in the United Kingdom or Ireland? If so, please note that neither the UK nor Ireland observe GMT while DST is active, so clocks there are 1 hour ahead of GMT during that period.

If all this does not help, please let us know.

Why is the time shown in the wrong format?

The World Clock supports both 24-hour and 12-hour (am/pm) clock formats. To change the format, please go to My Units and make a selection in the Time Format drop-down.

Why isn't my town included?

Our database of locations includes thousands of cities worldwide, and we now offer an additional 6 million places via the GeoNames database. If you still don't find your town, please let us know, and we will consider adding it.

The city search lists several places with the same name. Which is the one I'm looking for?

When you type the location into the search field and it suggests several places by the same name, first have a look at the country flag and the description in parentheses to identify the city you are looking for. If it is still unclear, click on one of the locations and check the geographical position on the map (on desktop) or click on the Time/General tab and check the longitude/latitude information shown near the top of the page.

FAQ: General Info & Instructions

Does the page always show current information?

The Time Zone City Page takes into account all Daylight Saving Time and time zone changes as soon as they happen. However, following a change, you have to refresh the page to see the latest information.

How do I find more info about the time zones?

Click on any of the time zone abbreviations or the sections of the horizontal time zone bar to find out additional information about the time zone.

What does “Preliminary date” mean?

Some locations have a history of very short-term changes to their time zone or Daylight Saving Time change dates. In that case, we generally mark all future dates as preliminary.

How do I change the location in the Difference row?

The Difference row shows the current time difference between the location and your home city. To select a different home city, click on the link displaying the time difference and select a location via the search field that pops up.

What does UTC/GMT +/- X hours mean?

The Current Offset row shows the time difference between the location and Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is the world's time standard. A negative value means that the location is behind UTC, a positive value means that it is ahead of UTC.

In terms of time, UTC is the same as GMT. However, there is a fine difference between the two.

Can I use ZIP or other postal codes to search for a city?

Yes, our city search engine supports ZIP and postal codes for the United States (5-digit ZIP codes only), Canada (first 3 letters/digits only), Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Norway.

How can I keep up-to-date about DST and time zone changes?

Our Time Zone News service provides info about all current developments in time zones worldwide.

How many time zones are there?

The number of time zones varies. You will find the current number of time zones here.
