Daylight Saving 2024 Ends in Canada
Canada ends Daylight Saving Time (DST) on Sunday, November 3, 2024. Many provinces and territories are pushing to end seasonal clock changes.
Most people living in Canada will set their clocks back 1 hour to standard time from 02:00 (2 am) to 01:00 (1 am), local time, on November 3, 2024.
Standard time, also known as winter time, will end on Sunday, March 9, 2025.
28 Days Longer than in Europe
Most of the United States will also end DST on the same date.
In 2007, the United States and Canada implemented changes to “spring forward” earlier and “fall back” later. They extended Daylight Saving Time to last 238 days, giving Americans and Canadians more daylight hours in the evening during much of the year. By comparison, Daylight Saving Time in Europe lasts 210 days.
In Europe, DST will end a week before Canada, on October 27, 2024.
DST Change
Clocks will change in almost all areas in Canada, except:
- Yukon (on permanent DST since 2020)
- Some areas in British Columbia
- Most of Saskatchewan
- Southampton Island
- Some locations in Québec east of 63° west longitude (e.g., Blanc-Sablon)

Provinces and Territories Aim to End Clock Changes
In Canada, the biannual clock change has sparked debate for years, with politicians in British Columbia, Ontario, and Alberta pushing to end the practice.
In 2019, British Columbia (BC) passed legislation for permanent Daylight Saving Time, but has yet to implement any changes to the twice-yearly clock changes. BC is waiting for its US neighbors—Washington, Oregon, and California—to make a similar move before anything is enacted.
In 2020, Ontario passed the Time Amendment Act to end Daylight Saving Time, but like British Columbia, Ontario is waiting for New York and Québec to do the same to maintain good trade connections.
Alberta held a referendum in 2021, and just over half of voters opted to keep changing the clocks, so the practice will continue there.
History of DST
Canada implemented DST as far back as 1908, making the small towns of Port Arthur and Fort William (later Thunder Bay) the first documented cases of Daylight Saving Time being adopted in the world.
Other Locations That Change
Also ending DST on November 3 are Cuba, Bermuda, The Bahamas, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and Thule Air Base, officially known as Pituffik Space Base since 2023, in Greenland.
