In Spain, Epiphany on January 6 is a public holiday and the day people exchange most of their Christmas presents.
Is Epiphany a Public Holiday?
The Three Kings' Day or Day of the Magi, also known as Epiphany, is a public holiday. If January 6 is on a Sunday, the following Monday is a public holiday in these Spanish regions: Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Canarias, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra, Ceuta, and Melilla.
Gifts for the Baby Jesus
The celebration on January 6 is dedicated to the three wise men, or kings, who brought the baby Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, according to Christian scripture. The three Kings are often referred to as Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar.
God's Incarnation
The Christian feast of Epiphany celebrates the revelation of Jesus Christ as God's incarnation. It is also known as the Twelfth Day of Christmas, as it happens twelve days after Christmas Day.
