About Unification Day
On January 24, 1859, Moldavia and Wallachia formally united to create the United Principalities. Along with Transylvania, these principalities were seen as crucial in the foundation of modern Romania. A new constitution came into effect in 1866, with the country being officially named Romania. After much discussion over the years, the Romanian government announced in 2014 that Unification Day would be a public holiday from 2015 onwards.
