About Inauguration Day
According to the Mexican constitution, the president is elected every 6 years. Once the president is elected, she or he takes office on Inauguration Day on October 1.
Traditionally, the new president used to take office on December 1 — until a change in the Mexican constitution in 2014 moved the date to October 1. The presidential election in 2018 however still followed the old date; President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was inaugurated on December 1, 2018. The election in 2024 is the first one with the "new" date of October 1.
