The unofficial holiday makes a statement against the consumerism that takes over the country on Black Friday. In the rest of the world, the holiday is observed on the last Saturday of November.

Created by Adbusters

Buy Nothing Day began in Canada in 1992 by Adbusters, a "global network of artists, activists, educators, students and entrepreneurs". The day was created in order to raise awareness about the effects of consumerism on society, the economy and the environment. It was first observed in September, but was then subsequently moved to November.

How to Celebrate?

  • Abstain from making any purchases on this day. Avoid going to the stores - brick and mortar or online.
  • The creators of this holiday, Adbusters, recommend that people cut up their credit cards, walk around stores without buying anything and do the whirl-mart. Whirl-mart is the act of walking around a store with a cart without buying anything.

Did You Know…

…that contrary to popular belief Black Friday is not the busiest shopping day in the U.S.? That distinction goes to the Saturday before Christmas.
