FAQ: Customizing the Calendar

What are the default calendar settings?

The calendar defaults to the current year for the country you are in, based on your computer's IP address.

What can I customize directly on the calendar page?

You can change Year and Country directly on this page. Several additional customizing options are available using the Quick Design and Formatting buttons above the calendar. The More Options button has links to more customizing options in separate forms.

Country

How do I choose a country?

Select Country from the drop-down menu at the top of the page. There are several hundred countries to choose from.

Why is a country missing?

We have calendars for more than 200 countries. If the country you are looking for is not on the list, we haven't added it yet. You may want to choose a neighboring or culturally similar country instead.

Why does the calendar display the wrong year?

Our calendars normally default to the current year. However, if a different year is displayed every time you open the calendar page, and you would like the current year to be shown by default, follow these instructions.

This issue usually arises when the calendar page is accessed via a bookmark, favorite, or otherwise saved link which is out of date. When you set up a calendar, the year is included as a parameter in the saved link (URL), like in the following example:

https://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/custom.html?year=2019&country=1&mtm=2&cdt=4&df=1

The highlighted section of the URL determines the year (here: 2019). If you click this link, the calendar will always go to 2019. For the bookmark, favorite or link to go to the current year, simply delete the last section of the URL. In line with the above example, it should now look like this:

https://www.timeanddate.com/calendar

Now save this page and, if necessary, delete the old bookmark/favorite/link.

Why does the calendar default to the wrong country?

Our calendar defaults to the country you are in. However, if you are using a bookmark, a favorite or an otherwise saved link, you may have saved it with a different country included in the URL. To ensure you always go to the current year's calendar for the country you are in, edit the URL in your bookmark to look like this:
https://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/

What is “Julian” on the country list?

The Julian calendar is an old calendar system which is 13 days different from the Gregorian calendar we use today. Some countries, such as Ethiopia and some Orthodox Christian Churches still follow a calendar similar to the Julian Calendar.

Do you want to add Day of Year (Julian) numbers to your calendar? See next question.

How do I add Day of Year (Julian) numbers?

1. Go to the calendar page.
2. Click the More options button above the calendar and select Advanced customization.
3. Click the tab called Other options.

1. Selecting holidays on the calendar page

  • Links for adding Common Observances, Clock Change Dates, and Seasons (equinox and solstice dates) are available for some countries.
  • The Select button opens a drop-down menu with options to either show No holidays or to add official holidays and observances, as well as religious celebrations commonly observed in that country. The selection varies according to country.

Why is the UK calendar missing holidays in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland?

As the UK consists of four constituent countries, the holidays which are not observed in all four countries are categorized as local holidays. Choose Holidays (incl. all local) and observances in the Select drop-down menu below the holiday section. At this point, it is not possible to select the local holidays in only one of the constituent countries.

Why is a holiday missing?

If you are in the UK, please see: Why is the UK holiday list missing holidays in England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland?

You may need to change the selection of holidays, or we may not have that holiday in our database. If you wish to notify us about a missing holiday, please use the feedback form at the bottom of the page.

How do I find the date for a holiday in a different year?

Select the calendar for a different year, and look in the holiday list below the calendar.
Alternatively, click the link to the relevant country in the holiday section and click the holiday link in the list. You will find a list of dates at the bottom of each holiday page.
